The choirs of the Church of Saint Paul and the Redeemer are an ever growing part of the history of the commitment of this parish to fine sacred music. Many hallmarks of the parish's life have been associated with music: the nationally regarded Men and Boy's Choirs, the founding of Music of the Baroque, the presence of highly gifted choirmasters/organists, and the most recent development of an offering of richly varied and unique liturgical music. We are an affiliate of the Royal School of Church Music in America (RSCM/A), an organization which promotes high standards in church music.sine nomineThis choir was founded in the fall of 2005 in response to the addition of another Eucharist on Sunday mornings. sine nomine provides musical leadership at the 9:15 Eucharist each Sunday with a warm-up at 8:15. Their choral season extends from the Sunday after Labor Day through the end of June and also includes major holy days and special services. Members of this choir usually have previous choral or musical experience and an ability to sight read. A membership privilege is granted to the parents of Treble Choristers so as to afford a share in a musical experience with their child. Since this choir only rehearses once a month (approximately every four Tuesdays), there is an added responsibility of musical homework for each member. Saint Nicholas ChoirThe newest choir of SPR will give younger children (grades K-2 or ages 5-7) the opportunity to experience music. An emphasis on basic musical skills will prepare each child for their entrance into the Treble Choir. The St. Nicholas Choir rehearses each Wednesday from 4:15-5:00. They will share their music with the community on a Sunday once a month. SPR SingersThe SPR Singers' primary role is to provide musical leadership at the 11:15 Eucharist each Sunday from the Sunday after Labor Day through the end of June. In addition, they sing for all major holy days and special services. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:30 with a Sunday morning warm-up at 10:15. The SPR Singers prides itself for its versatility and openness to new things. On a typical Sunday, the musical choices can range from Gregorian chant to Grieg to Gospel! The choir is open to anyone high school aged and older with a pleasant singing voice and a willingness to learn. Its membership ranges from the curious to the semi-professional singer. No previous experience is necessary for membership in this choir. Treble ChoirThe Treble Choir is open to all children of the community who are in third grade or eight years old. They rehearse from the week after Labor Day until the last week of June on Thursday afternoons from 4:15 to 5:30. They provide musical leadership each Sunday at the 9:15 Eucharist preceded by a Sunday morning warm-up at 8:15. They also lead Evensong song at 6:15 on the first Thursday of each month. The choir is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music which promotes education and excellence in choral singing. Each chorister has a weekly private lesson with the Director of Music which explores growth in vocal technique and music theory. Through a sequenced program of learning, each child is given clearly defined goals with awards and merits earned parochially and internationally. Each chorister earns a small stipend in exchange for their time commitment. Click here for the Choir Brochure 2006.
